Tawanka Elementary School has several transition points for students entering Kindergarten through middle school. Parents and staff have developed and supported the following strategies to assist students and families during these transitions and to ensure continuity of instruction and supports.

 

Transition Point: Pre-K to Kindergarten

  • Individual welcome visits for new families in August upon request
  • Kindergarten Orientation in August
  • Early Intervention and/or Head Start Transition Meetings in coordination with BCIU
  • The first day of school is dedicated exclusively to Kindergarten students so they may orient themselves to the new building, schedules/routines, and expectations
  • Parents attend Back to School Night in September to meet the teacher and learn about expectations and supports available to students and families
  • The Kindergarten team hosts a Parent University for kindergarten families in October to introduce parents to English Language Arts, Math, and Social and Emotional Learning topics and teach them activities they can do at home to support their child’s learning

 

Transition Point: Kindergarten to 1st, 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th

  • Individual welcome visits for new families in August upon request
  • New Student Orientation in August
  • Peer-led tour for new students starting mid-year with a 4th Grade Eagle Ambassador
  • Current classroom teachers assist in the development of class lists for following school year with Reading Specialists, Specials Teachers, School Counselors and Principal
  • MTSS Team reviews academic and behavioral data at the end of the school year to support appropriate placement and instructional planning for the following school year.
  • Parents attend Back to School Night in September to meet the teacher and learn about expectations and supports available to students and families
  • Students visit the next grade level in late May or early June to meet the teachers in their rising grade level

 

Transition Point: 4th Grade to Middle School (5th grade)

  • Reading Specialists, counselors and teachers meet to discuss and review data to help make recommendations for academic placement
  • Elementary school counselors collaborate with middle school counselors to ensure proper placement and review any non-academic concerns
  • Elementary school nurses give necessary medical updates to middle school nurses
  • Middle School Principals visit Tawanka in May to share information and answer questions about the upcoming transition to middle school
  • 5th Grade Orientation is held in August to allow students and families to meet teachers, counselors, and administrators
  • The first day of school is dedicated exclusively to grade 5 students so they may orient themselves to the new building, schedules/routines, and expectations
  • Parents attend Back to School Night in September to meet the teachers and learn about expectations and supports available to students and families

This Transition Plan was reviewed with staff between February 9 through February 13, 2026 to support coordinated implementation of transition strategies and continuity of instruction.
